Survey Results Reveal Knitter Interests

November 12 , 2012

Northbrook, IL — A recent survey conducted by AllFreeKnitting.com revealed the interests and habits of knitters who subscribe to Knit Picky Patterns, AllFreeKnitting’s free daily email newsletter. The goal was to understand how the online reader prefers to learn how to knit, get patterns and to interact with a community.

The study showed that community, in particular, is important among knitters. More than 72 percent engage in social media/community activities daily! And more knitters are using online as their primary or sole source for community building, locating knitting patterns and/or the purchase of knitting supplies.

Out of the 10,624 respondents to AllFreeKnitting’s survey, the majority were female knitters between the ages of 40-60 who enjoy knitting daily, working with worsted weight yarn and finding patterns online. This group is most likely to check social media accounts in the mornings and frequently buys yarn from companies such as Red Heart, Bernat and Lion Brand Yarn.

Aside from connecting with AllFreeKnitting through newsletters, respondents said they also enjoy interacting through a multitude of platforms including Facebook, Pinterest and YouTube.

Key findings of the survey include:

– Favorite Reader Projects:
34% – scarves
28% – sweaters
20% – afghans
16% – knit baby apparel and toys

– Social Media Use:
35% check social media in the mornings
28% check social media in the evenings

– Main Sources For Knitting Patterns:
82% – online
10% – books
8% – magazines

– Top Purchased Yarn Brands:
22% – Red Heart
20% – Lion Brand
11% – Bernat

Finally, the survey also asked readers what they would like to see changed in the Knit Picky Patterns newsletters, both in format and in content. Here is what a few readers had to say about the AllFreeKnitting newsletter, Knit Picky Patterns:

“I love this newsletter. It has a little of everything.”

“I love getting your newsletters! So many wonderful patterns to choose from. I have a list a mile long of things to make from your selections.”

“I love all your patterns. I print them out just about every day and make a lot of them.  Thank you!”
