Food Team Volunteers at Uptown Cafe in Chicago

Northbrook, IL – Eleven Prime Publishing employees visited a Chicago anti-hunger organization on July 13 to volunteer by serving hot meals to more than 90 people in need.

Jewish United Fund’s Uptown Café, a kosher anti-hunger program, provides hot meals in a restaurant-style setting. The café is open three days a week for dinner and on Sundays for brunch.

Samantha Rifkin, JUF Uptown Café coordinator and nutrition coordinator, said that people stuck between a rock and a hard place still deserve to be treated with dignity, which is why Uptown Café operates differently than cafeteria-style soup kitchens.

At the café within the EZRA Multi Service Center, they strive to create a sense of safety and community for diners, she said.

Prime staff underwent a 30-minute orientation before serving over 90 hot meals in the café.

Danielle Zimmerman, food team community editor, said “We all had a wonderful time and found serving in the Cafe to be a very rewarding and memorable experience. We all look forward to volunteering again soon, whether it’s through our company or on our own.”

“It was wonderful to work together for the sake of doing good in the community,” Zimmerman said.

FaveHealthyRecipes.com Unveils New Design

Northbrook, IL –  FaveHealthyRecipes.com unveiled a new look this week. Sporting a new logo and new motto, the healthy recipes website has a refreshing, sleek look.

Beth Ann Morley, editor of FaveHealthyRecipes.com, said, “We are thrilled to announce the site redesign for FaveHealthyRecipes.  It’s been exciting to see our site go from old to new, and we hope that you like the change as much as we do.”

FaveHealthyRecipes.com’s new logo features a clean-cut apple design and a green-toned color palette.
Matt Paulson, Prime Publishing’s in-house graphic designer, said “My inspiration for the new design was the concept of light, fresh food.”

“I wanted to convey that visually. Bright veggie greens speak to the concept of healthy eating and the fonts carry a light weight that gives the logo an airy feeling,” Paulson said.

The site’s new motto, “everyday recipes with a healthy twist,” reflects the philosophy of easy recipes that put a healthy twist on classic family favorites.

RecipeChatter Team Donates to WINGS Program

Northbrook, IL — RecipeChatter.com, a Prime Publishing food blog, held its first-ever online Cookbook Drive May 4-29.

Our readers donated over 400 cookbooks  to WINGS Program, Inc., one of the largest domestic violence service and housing providers in the state of Illinois.  They shipped or hand-delivered their new and gently used cookbooks to the Prime Publishing offices right here in Northbrook.

The cookbook drive was promoted to our readers, including on a RecipeChatter blog post.

“We are very touched by our readers’ participation. Readers mailed cookbooks from coast to coast in the U.S., and a couple from Canada,” said Jesse Carpender, editor of RecipeChatter. “People from the Chicago area also dropped off cookbooks to our Northbook office.”

“Many people wrote to us that they related to WINGS’ cause and wanted to help,” Carpender said. “It just goes to show how many people are affected by domestic abuse. We’re so glad we can contribute to WINGS’ efforts.”

Prime Publishing also plans to donate $600 worth of kitchenware from the food team’s Test Kitchen, where Prime’s recipes are developed. The book and kitchenware donations will be given to WINGS in June.

Arielle Matlin, food team promotions editor, said “We receive many great products to review in our Test Kitchen each week. We were happy to find WINGS and put these barely used gadgets and appliances to use. Some of the donations included a Hamilton Beach Stand Mixer, an Aroma Rice Cooker and a 12-piece Rachael Ray Cookware Set.”

The food team editors contributed to the drive by promoting it in RecipeLion.com and other Prime food site newsletters, promoting on social media, donating their own books, packing boxes, and spreading the word about the drive. WINGS helped to promote the drive on their own social media, as well.

Prime Publishing offered a $50 Starbucks Card to one reader who donated books as a prize for participation. The winner has not yet been chosen.

The books and kitchenware will be donated to WINGS Program, Inc’s three resale shops which bring in almost one third of WINGS’ $5 million annual budget. Single women and women with children are able to receive temporary safe shelter through WINGS housing while staff provides one-on-one, individualized assistance that allows women to set personal goals that will enable them to work, continue their education, and care for themselves and their children.

Robin Bergbreiter, director of resale operations, said “WINGS motto is ‘giving flight to hopes and dreams,’ and you have to have the funding and resources to provide that,” she said. “The resale stores are WINGS’ face to the community. For the protection of our clients, we don’t publicize the housing, so the resale stores are the signs you see on the street.”

Bergbreiter said the cookbooks from this drive can be placed in clients’ homes or sold to provide funding for WINGS’ services. “When you give us great stuff, we can do great things,” she said.

The success of this charity drive further demonstrates the generosity of the Prime Publishing community. Prime Publishing, LLC continues to work with various charities each year to help those in need. SeamsAndScissors Hosts Successful Fabric Drive for Charity

Northbrook, IL—Prime Publishing’s sewing blog hosted a fabric contest last month where readers sent in extra fabric that was then donated to a non-profit organization.

SeamsandScissors.com hosted the charity drive June 1 through June 25 that asked readers to send to Prime old fabric to donate to Urban Threads Studio, or UTS, for their summer camp incentive for children.

Urban Threads Studio, a not-for-profit organization, located at the Bridgeport Art Center in Chicago, Illinois, teach problem solving skills through textile arts. Each summer, they host a summer camp for kids in the area, and this summer was no different. They are learning how to sew shorts, dresses, pajama bottoms, and messenger bags.

“I first found out about UTS at Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago,” said Nicola Prybell, a Prime Publishing editor. “I just always had this idea that we could help them in some way. Being able to launch this fabric charity drive has been a fantastic experience.”

To give a little incentive to the readers, SeamsandScissors offered a free giveaway of a Bias Tape Maker, donated to them by Simplicity, that readers would automatically be entered to win when they donated.

SeamsandScissors collected so much fabric that it took them two trips with six helping hands to bring it down from the office to the minivan. The UTS Representative, Ilona, was concerned about all the giant black trash bags of fabric not completely fitting in the car. Luckily with a little coaxing, all the fabric fit perfectly and UTS ecstatic with the amount of donations they received.

“Seeing how generous readers were, and seeing the look on Ilona’s face when she was how much fabric was donated was truly priceless. It’s what made all of this hard work so worthwhile,” said Prybell.

AllFreeCrochet Helps Make Yarn Dreams Come True

Northbrook, IL –  AllFreeCrochet.com teamed up with Red Heart Yarns for yet another successful promotion. From March 27 through May 4, AllFreeCrochet ran the Red Heart Dream Yarn Prize Package contest– a giveaway that was valued at $125. One lucky winner received a prize package that was chock-full of amazing supplies including 17 balls of yarn, 1 set of crochet hooks, one set of knitting needles, plus a Red Heart tote bag.

Altogether, the month-long contest received 60,423 entries. An average yarn giveaway on AllFreeCrochet usually receives around 5,000 entries, so it’s safe to say that the Red Heart Dream Yarn Prize Package promotion was a success, both for AllFreeCrochet, as well as Red Heart yarns.

“Working with Prime Publishing has proven to be a successful strategy for Red Heart yarns time and time again,” said Alyson Bell, Vice President of Coats North America. “Whether we are doing a contest with them, an e-book or an exclusive newsletter, we see an instant lift in our traffic to our website, redheart.com.  But not only are we getting visits, we are getting engaged consumers who are sharing this information with their friends, expanding our reach.  We have been very pleased with the results we have seen with this partnership.”

Prime Publishing LLC, along with AllFreeCrochet, looks forward to more successful collaborations with Red Heart in the future. Stay tuned!
