Job Summary

Duties and Responsibilities

• Plan, acquire, and edit content for Rug Hooking and Wildfowl Carving Magazine’s print books and magazines. This includes, but is not limited to: assigning freelance content, writing and editing articles, and securing signed contracts from all contributors.
• Coordinate with authors, freelance writers, and photographers as necessary to negotiate article fees, develop story concepts and plan ahead for future magazine issues and books. 
• Manage layout of all books and magazines by working closely with the graphic design department to facilitate, edit, and approve print layout and cover design. 
• Approve final layouts for books and magazines once uploaded to the printer’s website.  
• Work with marketing and sales to coordinate advertising for books and magazines, making sure there are no blank pages or missing advertisements from any magazine issues or books. 
• Research and develop ways to grow Rug Hooking and Wildfowl Carving Magazine’s book club members and magazine subscribers. This includes identifying new advertising leads, conceptualizing new marketing incentives, and being on top of any relevant industry-related trends.  
• Run our annual online carving and rug hooking competitions each year. This includes updating website copy as needed,  securing new judges to rate entries, selecting top winners, and coordinating with carvers/rug hookers to get materials necessary to feature them in upcoming magazine issues, and books for both properties.
• Write original and engaging Editor notes for each magazine issue.  
• Prepare and organize monthly book club newsletter materials for current book club members. 
• Maintain Rug Hooking and Wildfowl Carving Magazine’s social media presence on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube as needed. 
• Travel to select events in the carving and rug hooking communities, as required, as the spokesperson for Wildfowl Carving Magazine and Rug Hooking magazine.

Qualifications

• BA or MA in journalism or English or similar field.
• Prior experience in print publishing, including books and magazines 
• Minimum 5 years of print book and/or print magazine experience required
• Strong writing, editing, research, communication, and time management skills.
• Detail oriented with the ability to meet deadlines effectively and multitask.
• Excellent writing and editing abilities; ability to write engaging and entertaining articles.
• Experience with online content management systems, webinars and/or video content is a plus.

Wildfowl Carving Magazine is published by Ampry Publishing LLC – a leader in building multi-platform brands that inform, inspire, and engage consumer audiences. Wildfowl Carving Magazine is dedicated to the art of decoy and decorative bird carving. Published quarterly since its spring 1985 issue, the magazine is available by subscription and in some book stores. Wildfowl Carving Magazine also has a subscription-based book club, which publishes 3 books per year, with topics ranging from step-by-step carving demonstrations to beautiful bird reference guides.

About Rug Hooking magazine & Book Club
Rug Hooking magazine is published 5 times per year and is available in select book and craft stores, and by subscription. Our goal is to provide high-quality articles and photographs about the art and craft of rug hooking, and how-to articles on techniques and projects. Whether a reader’s interests lie in traditional patterns, primitive styles, or original designs, Rug Hooking provides how-to articles on planning, dyeing, shading, and hooking. Instructional articles are complemented by features on such topics as hooked stair runners, clothing, wall hangings, decorations, and more, all beautifully illustrated with page after page of color photography. Rug Hooking magazine also has a subscription-based book club, which publishes 4 books per year, with topics ranging from Gene Shepherd’s comprehensive dyeing guides, to books on primitive rugs and easy punch needle projects.

While we have a comprehensive training program, we prefer candidates with at least 2-5+ years of online or related editorial work experience.

Our editors work or collaborate in teams, and our training program includes:
– CMS – We have developed a proprietary content management system (CMS).
– SEO-Driven Content Creation – We teach you the basics about writing engaging copy, creating headlines and how to use analytical tools to write articles that will be found by consumers using search features on our websites and search engines.
– Email Marketing – We have developed a proprietary email marketing software system. We will teach you how to use this platform to build and analyze email newsletters.

Prime Publishing LLC is seeking Editorial Interns for our cooking and crafting websites. Interns will learn about digital publishing, including online writing, social media, blogger outreach, analytics, and content publishing. The internship is set up as a hands-on 12-week learning experience. Our goal is to not only teach skills but also provide opportunities to work on real projects.

Interns will work on our Editorial team and will learn about the following areas:

• Site Content – Monitor, create, and update content for the websites to increase site traffic monthly.
• Newsletters – Create and analyze newsletter content in order to maximize site traffic, newsletter performance, consumer engagement, and advertising opportunities.
• Community – Monitor and create content across social media networks and blogs in order to reach a wider audience while implementing strategic goals.
• Promotions – Secure product(s) for site reviews and giveaways in order to increase traffic, engage consumers, and network with companies and publishers while working closely with sales for new revenue streams.
